Orryelle Defenestrate-Bascule
In conversation with Dominick Pio O’Cruadhliocht
Q: You are remarkably different from the norm. Was there a moment in your youth you realised you were you?
A: I don’t think I could pin it on a single moment. Maybe various moments. I always felt I did not fit in. Especially growing up with a conservative family in Perth. It was more of a consistent feeling. At school I was considered a freak. I did not play well with other children. I preferred reading and writing, away from the other kids. It was only like that until I met like-minded people. People who were more alternative and outside the mainstream. Especially people who were oriented toward Magic and Occultism.
Q: You express through many varied mediums. Is there one medium that you feel you excel in than others?
A: I don’t think there is any particular medium I excel in. Sometimes I focus on one particular medium. I like the way different media cross-pollinate. I don’t think "jack of all trade master of none" applies. Sometimes one project can boost another project, especially if I am stuck on one medium. A poem could lead to a song or even a painting, and vice versa.
Q: What artist or artists have been a driving inspiration to you?
A: Beksiński, who was a Polish painter. His use of light, space and scale. Austin Osman Spare for his convergence of magic, art and writing; a contemporary of Alistair Crowley. The filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky for his focus on the image rather than storytelling, especially his surrealism.
Q: Your works have strong tones of natural Paganism. Does this reflect any personal spirituality?
A:Yes, absolutely. I love nature and the natural world. I like to bring this into my art and keep it very organic. I feel this is ever more important in a society that is dominated by the virtual. I find a lot of forms in natural objects. For example, roots of trees, and craft them into more figurative works.
Q: The cosmic Gods have commissioned you to design a new planet or new dimension. What would it look like?
A:When it comes to dimensions, they already are and I already am. I feel my art is already that. I am already fulfilling that commission. I am creating new worlds through my art. At least attempting to do so.
Q: What do you feel is your contribution to the world and do you have a message or an agenda?
A:My intention is to make the world a bit stranger and more beautiful. To increase awareness of the connectivity of all spheres of life on this planet. To perpetuate the embodiment of the Divine.
